Leadership 801A students held a cake auction in the cafeteria this past Thursday. Students, teachers, and cafeteria staff all bid cakes and cupcakes baked by students and local bakers. In total, $410 was raised in support of Anderson House and Santa’s Angels.

Anderson House is a home for women, children, transgender people, and non-binary people who are suffering from domestic abuse. The home is administered by PEI Family Violence Prevention Services.

Santa’s Angels is an island charity that has been in operation since 2004. Every Christmas morning, the organisation dispatches Santa Claus and his elves across the island, to bring food and gifts to families that may be unable to afford Christmas presents. Families are either nominated by their communities or request a visit. The organisation also travels to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Sherwood Home, and the Addiction Centre in Mount Herbert, as well as various group and senior homes.

Though the atmosphere of the crowded cafeteria was at times somewhat tepid, there were also times of tension as bidders went back and forth over cakes. Mr. Lon Bechervaise acted as auctioneer, keeping the auction going by hyping up the cakes and mocking the bidders.

With several hundred dollars raised, the cake auction was a decisive success!
