Coffee house: Show your artistic talent

Writer's picture: Llew GormanLlew Gorman

Colonel Gray’s first ever Coffee House took place last Friday in the library. Arts Coffee Houses, events showcasing a school’s artistic talent, have been popular at other high schools, such as Bluefield and Montague Regional High School, for many years. The event featured two of Colonel Gray’s live music acts and a poetry reading.

Ms. Stetson, who hosted the event, prefaced it by saying that there would be more events like it if it went well. She later added that this would also be determined by how well library patrons clean up after themselves in the future. The library has recently had issues with students leaving messes at lunch.

The first group to perform consisted of two Colonel Gray teachers, His Majesty Jean-Paul Pendergast on guitar and vocals while Mr. Greg Sheppard on lead guitar. The duo played two songs: ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and ‘Head Over Heels’.

The duo was followed by Hayden Little, a poet and student at Colonel Gray. Little read two original poems, ‘Churchyards’ and ‘In the Woods’, the latter of which had been completed the day of the coffee house. Little also performs at open mics around Charlottetown.

The All-Colonel Gray musical ensemble Scarf Store closed the event.

The band consists of Jane Atkinson on guitar and vocals; Gerrica Doucette on bass, vocals, and keyboards; Jordyn Knox on guitar; and Golnar Saegh on drums.

Atkinson says that the band’s name comes from Saegh’s tendency to wear scarves. The band performed three songs; ‘1234’, ‘Rich Girl’, and ‘Brazil’.
