International Coffeehouse

On April 25th, parents and students alike gathered for the International Coffeehouse, a celebration of Colonel Gray’s talent and diversity! For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Coffeehouse was an exclusive event with only 250 tickets available.

The first performers were the dance group Celeste. It was their very first time performing for a live audience, and they were wonderful. They provided a fun and exciting start to the night! For more information on Celeste, check out Colonel Gray Newspaper’s instagram for a riveting interview.

Next, Rawda Alaskary sang a beautiful and moving Arabic song, with only a drum to accompany her melodious voice.

Another dance group performed, the Phillipino Dance Masters. The act began with young dancers performing a traditional dance. It then transformed into several different hip-hop, high school student groups.

Next Peter Ngo played a Vietnamese song on the saxophone. The melody was accompanied by a slideshow he made himself.

Finally, Los Cumbiamberos concluded the night with a rousing tropical, Spanish song. Keep an eye out for an interview with the band soon!

Throughout the night, the audience had the chance to answer several different international trivia questions about flags, food, and dances. The table with the most correct answers won a prize. Safe Grad also hosted a cake auction, with some delicious masterpieces to bid on. All the funds raised went to fund the graduation activities. Speaking of food, during intermission a variety of international dishes were served, including spring rolls, empanadas, street corn, yalaji, kibbeh, falafels, sushi, and samosas.

There was also an interactive art piece open all night long. Friends could take polaroid pictures which were then added to a painting of a teacup. The work of art highlights Colonel Gray’s “diversi-tea” and “creativi-tea.”

This amazing event would not have been possible if not for countless student and teacher volunteers. A huge shout-out to the KEY club, as well as Safe Grad, diversity club and so many others! Hopefully, this will not be the last International Coffeehouse!
